I just returned from Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos in El Salvador and Soledad came in my office to ask if I had a note for the bulletin. I looked at my calendar and said, "Oh no! It cannot be Lent already!" but of course, it will be starting this coming Wednesday.
While I was in El Salvador I was reading Pope Francis' book, the Joy of the Gospel, and many thoughts came to me about Lent. Of course, Lent is a time of fasting, prayer, and alms-giving, but Pope Francis also reminds us that some of our most serious sins are "sins of omission", not so much the things we have done, but the things we have failed to do. St. Paul knew that living the life Jesus taught is hard work, hence, this quote. Our toxic culture presents marriage as a fun adventure with a fun partner. The idea that marriage is for sanctification is a foreign concept.READ MORE
